The check engine light is controlled by the car’s computer, which receives input from hundreds of sensors across your car. These sensors make all sorts of measurements throughout your car, and they send codes to the computer every time something goes wrong. Many of these sensors are located in the fuel system, which stretches from your fuel tank through to your tailpipe. The sensors send a code to the computer whenever they notice anything abnormal, and that code is specific to the sensor and what kind of abnormal reading it took. The car’s computer logs the code and then turns on the check engine light.
